چکیده

What does it mean for a molecule to generate force? A good way to think about the force generated by a molecular machine is that force is one of the products of the cyclic, fuelconsuming chemical reaction. If the chemical reaction is favorable it will go forward even against a moderate load force. But if the force is too high, then it will inhibit the reaction, just like a high concentration of a chemical product would.

Hitching a lift hydrodynamically - in swimming, flying and cycling

Swimming animals set the water around them moving, and flying animals generate air movements. Other animals traveling with them can save energy by exploiting these movements of the fluid medium; similarly, a cyclist can save energy by riding close behind another. A new study of dolphin mothers and calves exemplifies the advantages of moving in concert.

Professor Robert McNeill Alexander CBE FRS (1934-2016).

Robert McNeill Alexander, known to friends and colleagues as 'Neill', was a zoologist with an engineer's eye for how animals work. He used mathematical models to show how evolution has produced optimal designs. His skill was to choose appropriate models: realistic enough to contain the essence of a problem and yet simple enough to be tractable. He wrote fluently and easily: 23 books, 280 papers...

The role of hypotheses in biomechanical research.

This paper investigates whether there is a discrepancy between stated and actual aims in biomechanical research, particularly with respect to hypothesis testing. We present an analysis of one hundred papers recently published in The Journal of Experimental Biology and journal of Biomechanics, and examine the prevalence of papers which (a) have hypothesis testing as a stated aim, (b) contain hyp...

Tendon elasticity and muscle function.

Vertebrate animals exploit the elastic properties of their tendons in several different ways. Firstly, metabolic energy can be saved in locomotion if tendons stretch and then recoil, storing and returning elastic strain energy, as the animal loses and regains kinetic energy. Leg tendons save energy in this way when birds and mammals run, and an aponeurosis in the back is also important in gallo...
